Effect of Ginger on Nausea and Vomiting in Patient’s receiving chemotherapy

 

Abstract

Quasi-experimental research method was to determine effect of ginger on nausea vomiting in Patient’s receiving chemotherapy. 60 patients receiving chemotherapy was drawn by the selection criteria from a population of patients admitted in Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University during January 2013 and December 2014. The experiment group who received the information about the prevention of ginger on nausea and vomiting, then drinks fresh ginger 300 grams to 500 cc of water to drink before meal and before bed, 4 times a day to the last day of treatment. Demographic data and nausea vomiting data were collected after the experiment group had agreed to participate in the study. Nausea and vomiting data were collected after received ginger session. The subjects were interviewed by telephone after hospital discharge once a week for total of 4 sessions. In the control group, the patients received standard nursing care and data was collected with the same instruments. Data were analyzed for GEE (generalized estimating equation) to compare nausea and vomiting scores and t-test to compare the number of nausea and vomiting between the experiment group and  control group. The results of this study show that patients who received ginger had significantly lower scores in nausea and vomiting than patients who did not receive ginger (Mean Deviation1.23 P<0.001, 95%CI 0.77 to 1.69) and nausea and vomiting of patients who received ginger show significantly lower scores than patients who did not receive ginger  (Mean Deviation 2.1 P<0.001, 95%CI 1.42 to 2.78)
